Berber Lambrechts

Is it wallpaper, a tadpole surrounded by mud, or a bead in the sleeve of a fur coat?
Berber Lambrechts shifts between the known and the unknown in her paintings. Her work arises from the alienation and imperfections that she finds in her surroundings and photographs. It fascinates her how the same object can suddenly appear to be something else. By zooming in or isolating objects, she keeps searching for the turning point, where an object does not become totally abstract but loses its direct recognition. It's this tension that intrigues her and that plays with the viewer's perception.

Recurring in her works is an uncanny atmosphere, which emerges in the color tints with which she builds up her paintings. Her canvasses take you to a kind of in-between world, a turning point from one object to another, all caught in the same image. Lambrecht her work continues to surprise you because new observations keep imposing themselves on you.
